The victim is understood to have reported the incident to police in the nearby town of Blanes later in the day after initially calling 999 from the scene but panicking and leaving before help arrived.

Some Spanish media outlets have described the woman as English, although she is said to live in Lloret de Mar.

No-one from the regional Mossos d’Esquadra police force was available for comment.

Local reports say the rapist sexually harassed the woman as he followed her before striking in the unidentified park.

Investigators are looking through footage from CCTV cameras in the area and have been given a description of the man they are hunting.
