Just days after an Iranian Instagram star known as “Zombie Angelina Jolie” was sentenced to 10 years in prison, she was released on bail. The 19-year-old, who goes by Sahar Tabar, was first arrested in 2019.
Sahar, whose real name is Fatemeh Khishvand, posted highly edited photos of herself on Instagram. After her arrest, for charges including corruption of young people, her account was suspended.

Journalist Masih Alinejad posted the news of Sahar’s release on Twitter, saying it came after “massive media pressure.” Many people have spoken out against her arrest.
There were rumors that Sahar had undergone as many as 50 cosmetic surgeries. Although she has admitted to having some procedures, she says the look was accomplished mostly through makeup and photo editing.

“This is Photoshop and makeup. Every time I publish a photo, I paint my face in an increasingly funny way,” she explained. “It is a way of expressing yourself, a kind of art. My fans know that this is not my real face.”
Last April, Sahar’s lawyer said she had contracted COVID-19 in prison, and was moved to a quarantine section. Activists such as Masih Alinejad have spoken out against Sahar’s imprisonment.

“Her mother cries every day to free her innocent daughter from prison, but she is helpless,” she said. “Now we need you, Angelina Jolie. You are an amazing ambassador. Now you can give a voice to Sahar Tabar, who’s only 19 years old.”
She added that the Islamic republic has previously arrested women for acts such as dancing, modeling, and removing their veils. “We need to be united against this gender apartheid,” she wrote.
